DescriptionAfrica Union summit opens in the Ugandan capital Kampala, focusing on the Somalia crisis.
African leaders condemned Somalia's al Shabaab rebels at a Kampala summit on Sunday.
Officials say the summit will beef-up an African force fighting the group behind attacks that killed 76 people in Uganda this month.
Opening the African Union summit, Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, called for the al Qaeda-linked group's defeat.

"This is the flag of the African Union forces flying in Somalia, and these characters attacked the African Union flag. This is not acceptable as far as I am concerned."
The twin suicide attacks on soccer fans watching the World Cup final on television in Kampala earlier this month has put the Somali crisis at the top of the agenda.
More than 30 African leaders are under pressure to respond.

"I am glad the whole of Africa has condemned it, let us now act in concert and ship them out of Africa."
African Union Commission Chairman, Jean Ping, called the al Shabaab attacks "despicable" and says the continental body is ready to step up its response.
Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, says his government condemned the attack, calling al Shabaab, "extremists".
