Burundi's President Launches Campaign To Stay In Power Until 2034

Published
Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza has launched a referendum campaign to stay in power until 2034. He's already serving a controversial third term, which saw mass protests and violence break out in the country in 2015. Now, Nkurunziza wants to amend the constitution so he can serve another two terms. The opposition in the country has already condemned the move. They say it violates a peace agreement signed back in 2-thousand which ended 13 years of civil war in the country. Tens of thousands of Burundians have fled the violence since 2015. And peace talks between the opposition and government have all but ended in collapse.
