West African leaders from the regional group ECOWAS have suspended Mali from the bloc but did not impose new sanctions as they were afraid of worsening the country's security situation.
They met interim President Assimi Goita who led the coup, the second in nine months.
They called on Goita to hold a presidential election next February as promised and to continue supporting the regional fight against armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS)
Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports Bamako, Mali.
