Ethiopia declares state of emergency in opposition-ruled Tigray

Published
The UN is calling for a de-escalation of tensions in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region after the central government launched a military operation there.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed accuses the region's ruling party - Tigray People's Liberation Front - or TPLF.- of attacking federal troops, and says it must be "destroyed".
Abiy has declared a six-month state of emergency and shut down electricity, phone and internet services in Tigray.
TPLF was a part of the governing coalition before Abiy booted it out.
