Hyacinth invader plant threatens property market in the Hartebeespoort Dam

Published
The resurfacing of the hyacinth invader plant in the Hartebeespoort Dam in North West has led to panic selling by some property owners. Many fear the value of their properties will depreciate due to the negative impact of the invasive weed species.

The dam is largely covered by hyacinth and water activities have been limited. Boat companies are also unable to do boat cruises. Tourists are reportedly cancelling their bookings at local guesthouses and places of leisure in the area. Sentleeng Lehihi and video journalist Jabu Oa-Afrika compiled this report.
