Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway celebrates its 5th anniversary

Published
Kenya is marking the fifth anniversary of its Standard Gauge Railway. The Mombasa-Nairobi track was constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation. Work began in 2014 and ended in 2017. Travel time between the two cities has been cut almost in half, from about ten hours to approximately five hours. This has in turn boosted the movement of cargo along its corridor. The project also includes the Nairobi-Suswa SGR that began operations in mid-October in 2019. Officials say the railway has transported nearly 8-million passengers in the last five years.
