Today marks the celebration of Penguin Awareness Day, a day of great significance for South Africa, and more specifically Algoa Bay.
The islands in the bay are critical for the future of the endangered African penguin as it is home to the biggest breeding colony of African Penguins in the world.
Three months ago a large number of penguins were affected by an oil spill in Algoa Bay during a ship to ship refueling operation. They have nearly all been cleaned and rehabilitated and have been sporadically released back into the wild by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) and SANPARKS.
