Renewed violence in disputed Western Sahara

Published
Western Sahara has been a contested territory for decades between the Polisario Front independence movement of Western Sahara and the Moroccan government. For 29 years, a ceasefire has been in place to keep peace in the region. However, the Polisario Front says it is ending the truce after Morocco said it would start military operations at the Guerguerat crossing, which is a buffer zone between Morocco and the self-declared Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The United Nations mission in the area, MINURSO, says it has attempted to reduce hostilities between Polisario supporters and the Morroccan military.
